Case Studies - Recent projects:
Comprehensive Recommendations for Substations Grounding Upgrades
A large grid utility requested conditional assessment of 8 substations within a one-year period. Measurements covered the integrity of bonds to every freestanding device or structure. Individual substation reports detailed fault levels, existing ground grid layout tracing, ground potential rise, ground electrode resistance, interconnected ground impedance and step and touch potentials relative to safe body withstand, as well as zone of influence (ZOI) calculations for telecom concerns.
The client gained effective recommendations for specifying ground grid upgrades and complete report documentation to support corporate due diligence regarding personnel safety concerns. Once the new ground grid was installed, grounding system measurement re-assessment was performed to ensure the effectiveness of the new grounding relative to the acceptable safety standards
Electro-magnetic Field (EMF) Assessment under 500 kV Transmission Lines
A City in Ontario and Hydro utility requested a customer to performed EMF audit (measurements, modeling and analysis present) under 500 kV where the customer wanted to get a permit for a large parking lot under the lines.
Magnetic and Electric field tests and modeling using advanced software showed the compatibility of the EMF levels with the international safety standards recorded. Induction currents leading to electrostatic shocks where below 5 mA. Spark Discharges analysis was conducted, which introduces transient currents into a person when the electrical breakdown of an air gap between the person's body and a conductive object (or ground) occurs.
Power Quality Analysis
A large utility came up with a comprehensive technical requirements for distributed generation (DG) interconnections, and studies each project to predict the impact on power quality before approving the project.
The utility's personnel aim was to collect and analyze field measurements to verify compliance, and the accuracy of their connection impact assessments (CIA).
TEEBA analyzed power quality data to determine the impact on the client's feeder voltage performance resulting from various renewable generation projects, ranging in size from 200 kW to 10 MW. Wind, PV solar, and small hydro projects were studied.
TEEBA identified several DG projects that were causing power quality problems and analyzed the impacts on the distribution system. For each project, TEEBA provided practical recommendations for effective mitigating solutions, thus ensuring that the utility customers continued to receive high-quality electrical power.
